Anthony Casalena attended the University of Maryland on a regular basis in 2003.
He had no knowledge and no money.
14 years later, his business, Squarespace, generated $200 million in revenue as an online platform for creating and publishing more than 1 million websites.
His tale is as follows:
April 2003. He had little money and had never studied design or programming, but he was forced to do so in order to create a home for himself on the Internet.
He didn’t believe he was creating a company. He was resolving his own issue.
December 2003. Squarespace was founded when Anthony released the initial version of the technology he had created.
To purchase the computer servers needed to host the Squarespace code, he borrowed $30,000 from his father.
2004 – 2007. Anthony operated Squarespace alone for three years. He managed marketing, educated and engaged with customers, and developed the code.
He chose to compete with another audience that appreciates beautiful design rather than Drupal, WordPress, and Joomla.
As a result, Squarespace had earned over $1 million by the time Anthony finished college.
The crew eventually grew to around 30 people after he relocated to New York.
2008 – 2010. Casalena and two other team members modified the code, making it scaleable and better suited for college dorm rooms.
July 2010. Accel Partners and Index Ventures contributed $38.5 million to the company’s fundraising.
April 2014. General Atlantic contributed an additional $40 million to Squarespace.
October 2014 Brace.io, a firm that uses cloud-based technologies to create websites, was purchased by Squarespace.
Revenues reached $100 million in 2015, and the private company now had 550 employees.
The business of Anthony Casalena made more than $200 million in sales in 2016.
