Unbounce examined 2,345,864 views of exit intent popups and found two insights:

  1. The first saw a 36% decrease in conversions.
  2. The second one went up by 96%.



They conducted an A/B test on:

Popup, 900×700 pixels


B: A popup with a size of 800 by 500 pixels.


The 900x700px popup proved to be too big for some browsers as a result. It consequently resulted in a 36% reduction in overall impressions and load/view ratio.



They conducted an A/B test on:

A one-stage popup (input email right inside a popup).


B: Two-stage popup (“get …” button on a popup that leads to an opt-in landing page)



conversions rose by 96% using a two-step popup!
